But the episode has left Webster angry. And it could have been a lot worse.
The customer on the BT community forum told how they had received a letter dated 8 August that was almost identical to the one sent to Webster. It gave a deadline of 16 August But on 16 August the customer received a call on their mobile from a friend who said he had tried to call them on their landline but the number was unobtainable.
In an update on the forum, the customer said they finally got their number back on 3 October. The telecoms industry says safeguards have been built into the process to protect consumers from these types of errors. Once this letter is received, if the transfer request is unsolicited, the consumer can contact their provider to inform them that they have never asked to switch their phone service.
Once the customer has done this, their provider should stop the switch. Ofcom has indicated that even if a customer missed the letter and the line was switched, their provider could restore the service.

I'm helping my parents with their move to half a mile down the road and it's ludicrous that they cannot keep their number. They say that Openreach will assign a new one. I'm trying to contact them, but there's no way you can speak to an actual person. Anyone any contact numbers or email addresses I can use to contact Openreach?
Openreach's customers are the service providers, like Sky. It's unlikely that they'll intervene on behalf of an end consumer. Their website will give details of contact options. FYI I did manage to speak to someone at Openreach who was extremely helpful. It seems to me every other provider can offer this service. Yes, same issue with me, think Sky should be upfront and say you cannot move number to new property They can't even explain why when it's same exchange..
They can easily keep your number when you switch.. Never again will I have Phone and Broadband with them.. More from Sky.
